William was the oldest child of Lucius and Lula White, who were American citizens living in Brazil, at the time of his birth.
William married Sarah Katherine "Kate" Smith on Valentine's Day 1899 in Evergreen, Texas, in San Jacinto County. At first, they lived in Oakhurst where Kate taught school, but soon moved to Cleveland, where William was a businessman and became postmaster, and where they raised eight children: Fonso, Luke, Bob, Doug, Walton, Katherine, Elizabeth and Neil.
It was said that he had learned Portugese from the servants as a small boy in Brazil and that even after 60 years of living in Texas, he still had just the slightest of accents, not so much that it made him sound foreign, but just enough to add a melodic quality to his speech.Family stories often speak of William's kind and happy demeanor.

MRS. KATE WHITE
Sarah Katherine Smith White
1879 - 1965
Grandmother told my sister Judy that, as a girl, she walked across the prairie, beside a covered wagon, from Mississippi where she was born, to Texas, with her family. That was likely in the summer of 1890. After graduating from high school, "Miss Sarah" taught school for a while before marrying William Alfonso White on Valentine's Day 1899 in the Baptist Church in Evergreen in San Jacinto County, Texas. ~~ Together they raised eight children: Fonso, Luke, Bob, Doug, Walton, Katherine, Elizabeth and Neil. ~~ Grandmother also ran a dress store, The Smart Shop, in downtown Cleveland, Texas. ~~ Many thanks to my cousin Jeff from Corsicana for sending a copy of the 1965 news clipping telling of my grandmother's life and death. Not only did it answer many questions, it also opened a world of research.

FONSO WHITE
Auto Mechanic Extraordinaire
My Uncle Fonso was a veteran of World War I and is buried in Forest Park East Cemetery, near the Gulf Freeway, in Webster, Texas. Fonso was the oldest of Kate and William's eight children. His siblings were Doug, Bob, Luke, Walton, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Neil. He was a superb auto mechanic. I remember he and my dad (his brother Neil) talking about the Magnolia Oil Company. Uncle Fonso's son, by his first wife, Esther Mae Parson, was named George William White, but we called him Billy. My dad always asked after Billy and LaVerne. He traveled to Illinois once in the 1960s to visit my dad. I remember especially his telling us about visiting the Indianapolis Speedway. When I visited him, in the 1970s, he was living with his second wife, Virgie, in South Houston, in Harris County, Texas. Though in ill health, he was still able to diagnose the problem we are having with our Ford just by listening to it through an open window from inside the house! If you knew my Uncle Fonso, please contact me by way of the Suggest Edits button so we can add your memories to this memorial.

Lucius James "Jim" White was born to Luke and Hortense White on September 8, 1929, at Baptist Hospital in Houston Texas. He passed away on June 15, 2017, in San Antonio Texas at the age of 77. Jim grew up moving around Texas oil towns as his father worked for Magnolia Pipeline Company. He worked on the pipelines himself as a young person. He met Margaret "Ann" Fowler at the First Baptist Church in Corsicana Texas, and they married on October 10, 1953. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of North Texas and taught school in Beaumont Texas before entering the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After leaving the Air Force, Jim worked for Mobil Oil Company in Dallas. He then attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, where he received a Masters in Religious Education. He earned a Doctorate in Education from the University of North Texas. He spent his life serving God, sharing the Gospel's message with everyone he met, ministering to those in hospitals and prisons, holding Bible studies in his home with his wife, feeding those who were hungry, and providing educational resources and clothing and other necessities to those in need. He served as a minister of Christ's church at Town East Baptist Church in Mesquite Texas, the Hill Baptist Church in Augusta Georgia, Woodstock Park Baptist Church in Jacksonville Florida, Sharpstown Baptist Church in Houston, and the Anchor in Surfside Beach. He helped start Northwest Academy, Bellaire Christian Academy and Rosehill Christian School, all in the Houston area, and served as the first headmaster of each. He was also the headmaster for Second Baptist School in Houston, Dallas Christian Academy, and Brazoria Christian Academy.
He was known very affectionately as "Dr. White." After retiring from paid work, he spent 25 years volunteering with Christian groups and traveling. He spent time working with the Canadian Baptist Seminary, and working with mission groups in Africa and China, teaching and preaching. He served as interim pastor at churches in towns around Athens and Malakoff. His faith in God and his devotion to prayer were defining characteristics of his life. He loved to teach the Bible and continued to hold Bible studies at his home and in church. He firmly believed that God supplies all of our needs, and he taught his children, as well as those in his Christian schools and Bible studies, that loving God was the most important thing of all. Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann, just short of their 60th wedding anniversary. He passed away on June 15, 2017, in San Antonio Texas at the age of 77.

Mr. Walton E. White
Superintendent, Sugar Land I.S.D.
(1950 - 1956)
Collective memories from the four (4) Earnest kids
Jo Grace (Jo), Judy, Billy, & Carolyn
Walton E. White loved sports, having an innate knowledge of all different sports. He was a wonderful football coach and was instrumental in the success of the Sugar Land Gator football team. He had an ability to watch a game, size up the problems, and know what to do. He also recognized talent and was able to nurture it. Mr. White encouraged Kenneth Hall, who played in the band, to try out for football. Kenneth would play ball; at half-time he would perform with the band, then finish playing the 2nd half. Mr. White was raised, we think, in East Texas. After high school he entered the Navy during World War II and was assigned to a battleship. By the time he left the service his dark hair had turned snow white. It made him appear older than he was.
In the late 40's, Edward and Mildred Earnest worked at Caterina I.S.D. (Dimmet County), which had a small student enrollment. There were only three employees in the high school. Mr. Earnest was superintendent, principal, teacher, coach, janitor, football, basketball and track coach. Mrs. Earnest, in addition to teaching, was the girl's coach. Miss Pierce, a teacher who lived at Pierce Ranch near the edge of town, was the school's third employee. All eleven boys, who comprised the entire high school, were on the football team. In 1948 Caterina High won the 6-Man District Championship. Mr. White must have worked in an adjoining school district because he met Mr. Earnest at a track meet where their team's competed against each other. Both men loved sports and became good and fast friends.Later, Mr. White became superintendent of Pearsall I.S.D (Frio County) and Mr. Earnest joined him as principal. They made a great team. Even though they lived on different streets, their houses backed up to each other's back door. Mr. Earnest and Blondie, the owner of the local theater, would referee the football and basketball games. Once the entire town watched the Harlem Globetrotters play the Pearsall basketball team.Around 1950 Mr. White accepted the position as superintendent of Sugar Land I.S.D. In 1952 the position of high school principal became available. He called Mr. Earnest, who made the long trip, much to the surprise of his wife. One of the incentives was the salary: $500.00 a month, which was the most money he had made in his life. After the Earnest family moved into their company home on 6th street, Mr. White encouraged Mrs. Earnest to accept a teaching position which was vacant. She had four children, ages 11 – 4, and she wanted time off. Mr. White persuaded her to take the position, and she agreed "as a favor." Once she started working, she never stopped until she retired. The White's lived in the first brick house next to the old hospital on 3rd street, now called Lakeview, across from the old Sugar Land gym. His wife, Clifford, was a 4th grade teacher. She and Mrs. Earnest became good friends. The Whites were never able to have children. In the summer of 1956 the Board of Education was having a meeting in the library. Mr. White started feeling sick and just as he stood up, he passed out. Before he could hit the floor, Mr. Earnest caught him. Mr. White had a massive heart attack. Dr. DeBakey was a young cardiologist in Houston, just starting his practice. He operated on Mr. White, but the operation, unfortunately, was unsuccessful. Mr. Earnest took it very, very hard. The Board of Education offered Mr. Earnest the position of superintendent, but he turned it down. He remembered Mr. Edward Mercer from his college days at San Marcos State Teacher's College. Mr. Mercer accepted the position as superintendent.
Mrs. White began working at Deer Park I.S.D. She met a wealthy rancher, married and moved tonorthwest Texas. She later died in a nursing home.

Neil was a quiet man who worked hard and adored his wife. He enjoyed football, yardwork, car repair, country music, dog-training, and piling the family into the car to go to Zesto's for soft-served ice cream cones. We are very lucky to have had this strong but kind man as our father.

Neil's parents gave him the middle name Ellis to honor the family of Rev Joseph HH Ellis, the Baptist minister who married them in 1899. Rev Ellis had named his son Neal Ellis. My sister Judy told that Grandmother and Granddad liked the sound of that, but opted for a different spelling, so the name would be distinctly his own.

EFFIE WHITE (1923-2003) -- The earthly remains of Effie White are buried next to those of her beloved husband, Neil, near a large magnolia tree in Huntsville Memorial Gardens in Madison County, Alabama. -- Effie Green was born in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in 1923. Her mother, Lacy, was known as "Mama Green." Effie's father, Harmon Dillard Green, was a coal miner and a farmer. Her brothers were William, Green, Bill, Robert, Terry and Jay. Sisters were Ethel, Lindy, Jessie, Syble, and Ivy. -- Effie moved to Cleveland Texas as a teenager. There she met and married Neil Ellis White. In the coming years, while Neil worked with munitions for the US Army, Effie kept their home and cared for their five children: Neil Jr (Skip), Judy, Debbie, Carolyn and Barbara. The family settled in Galena Park Texas in the early 1950s, until 1959 when they all moved to Wilmington Illinois. Then, in 1968, Neil and Effie, along with their two youngest, went to live in Huntsville Alabama. Moving to Alabama proved to be a blessing as Effie's elderly mother fell into ill health, and Effie and her sisters took turns caring for Mama Green so she could stay in her own home. Years later, after all the children left the nest, Effie and Neil lived for a brief time in Oxford Alabama before coming back home to Huntsville, where they were able to enjoy Neil's retirement. -- Effie was a great cook. Once retired, Neil would lovingly say "Every day a holiday, and every meal a banquet." Effie enjoyed shopping, especially visiting the Farmers' Market. Her vegetable soup with corn bread was my favorite. Her cornbread dressing with giblet gravy at Thanksgiving was a close second. She was also a skilled seamstress and found peace while working in her yard, tending hydrangeas, roses, white daisies, daylilies, red plums, dogwoods, and magnolias. Notice the dogwoods on the grave marker. -- Her grandchildren will always have warm memories of a Granma who loved them more than words could express. What better legacy could she leave them? -- This is my mother's story, as best I can remember it.
Respectfully submitted, Carolyn 2023

Neil Ellis White was born on 10 August 1916 in Cleveland Texas, in Liberty County, to Kate and William A White. William was a businessman and the postmaster of Cleveland Texas and Kate ran a dress shop. Neil met and married Effie Green in Cleveland Texas. They had five children: Neil Jr, Judy, Debbie, Carolyn and Barbara. They lived on Sherman Street in Houston before settling in 1952 in Galena Park, Texas, where they were lucky enough to live across the street from Ralph and Meriam Riha. Neil worked for the War Department (later the US Army, then the Department of Defense) for over 30 years, first as a truck driver and a dock worker, then as a foreman, and later as a logistics officer specializing in munitions. During WWII, Neil worked 18-hour days, loading ships in Houston with supplies headed to the Pacific. Later, shortly after the Texas City Disaster in 1947, Neil was one of a crew sent to Texas City to help clean up the mess. It wasn't until 40 years later that he told me that part of his job was to recover the bodies and take them to a make-shift morgue for identification. Neil was employed at the San Jacinto Ordnance Depot near Houston Texas until the late 1950s, when he worked along side officials from Washington DC to help close it down. He was tempted to take a DOD post in France, but opted instead to run a gas station in Galena Park, until he was offered a government job near Joliet Arsenal in Illinois. Neil's group was called ASPA which I think stood for Army Supply and Procurement Agency. In 1968, the family moved from Wilmington, Illinois, to Huntsville, Alabama, where Neil worked with Redstone Arsenal on the Safeguard Project, and where Effie was able to be closer to her family in and around Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Once all the children had left home, Neil took a job in Oxford Alabama for a short time, before retiring back to Huntsville.

As a teenager, Debbie was part of the Galena Park TX Jr High and Wilmington IL High School Bands, in which she played flute and piccolo. She loved marching band, baton twirling, playing tennis with her dad and all things musical. Debbie graduated from Wilmington High School in 1965; attended Illinois Wesleyan and Northern Illinois universities and graduated with a BA in Education, focusing on music education and folk literature. By the time she began teaching full-time, she was an accomplished flutist, who had played with the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia. Debbie taught private flute lessons for many years. Debbie also taught band and music in public schools in Huntsville AL, Angleton TX, Panama City FL, and Watkinsville GA. She earned a Masters of Education from the University of Georgia in 1985 and a Specialist of Education degree in 1990. Debbie was a musician and an educator. Many of her students have gone on to become teachers themselves. In retirement, Debbie took great pride and pleasure in her work at a local women's specialty clothing store, Catherine's. She enjoyed assisting ladies in looking and feeling their best. Nothing, however, gave her as much joy as being with her sweet grandbaby Neil and his vivacious big sister Sabrina. Giving them the best life possible was the focus of her last years.
Debbie passed away early Tuesday morning, 10 May 2016, in Athens GA, after
years of chronic asthma. She was preceded in death by her parents, Neil and Effie White of Huntsville AL, and her brother, Neil Jr. of Lewisburg TN.She is survived by her three sisters: Judy Johnson of Wilmington IL; Carolyn Davis of Pipe Creek TX; and Barbara Strickland of Huntsville AL; her daughter, Susan Satterwhite Williams of Athens GA; her two grandchildren, Sabrina and Neil; Susan's father, H Dwight Satterwhite, Jr.; her nine nieces and nephews; and her many cousins, in-laws, friends and associates. A memorial service was held Monday 16 May 2016 at New Covenant Worship Center in Athens GA. Debbie had asked that we play a CD of "The Minute Waltz," performed by Sir James Galway, as part of that service, and it was beautiful. It made me think she was reminding us that our time in this life is short, so put your heart into it and play it so well it moves others to greatness. She is missed. Respectfully submitted, with words from all the family, Debbie's sister, Carolyn

John Artie Browning passed away on November 3, 2013 in Lacey, WA at the age of 90, following a stroke. He was born in Kosse, Texas in 1923 to John A. and Etta Ware Browning. He was raised on a dairy farm in east Texas and graduated from Gladewater High School in 1941. While attending Texas A&M, he enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the USS Saratoga as a communications officer in 1944. Artie married Arra B. White in 1946. She was the love of his life, and they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on March 2. Artie completed a B.S. degree in biology at Baylor University in 1947 and began his graduate studies at Cornell University the next year. In 1953, he received a Ph.D. in plant pathology from Cornell and accepted a position on the faculty of Iowa State University in Ames. He spent 28 years at ISU teaching and conducting research that focused on managing diseases of cereal crops, primarily oat rust. Artie left ISU in 1981 to become head of the Plant Science Department at Texas A&M University. He retired from Texas A&M in 1990 but took his Professor Emeritus status seriously and continued to be professionally active. He was a prolific writer throughout his career and authored or co-authored numerous publications, including a book, 22 book chapters, over 40 papers in research journals, and more than 60 less technical papers. He gave frequent lectures and seminars on plant pathology and related topics. Although focused primarily on his research, he was also interested in the application of science to public policy and education. This led to his participation in a number of national and international panels and committees on Integrated Pest Management and other subjects. Enjoying the travel opportunities that his career provided, Artie and Arra made many memorable trips around the U.S. and abroad. They took the family to Bogota, Colombia in 1963, where Artie spent 18 months working with the Rockefeller Foundation. He also made several trips to Israel, including an 18-month stay as a Fulbright Scholar in 1990-91. His Israeli research involved incorporating some of the genetic diversity and natural resistance of wild oats into cultivated oats. Artie was active in a number of professional organizations, especially the American Phytopathology Society (APS). He became an APS Fellow in 1980 and served as president during 1981-82. He continued to be active in APS after retirement and advocated for the creation of Doctor of Plant Health educational programs. The first of these was established at the University of Florida in 1999. In 2011, he and Arra donated funds to establish the APS Foundation Plant Medicine and Health Travel Fund. After returning from Israel in 1991, Artie and Arra moved to Olympia to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They have lived at the Panorama retirement community in Lacey since 2002. They were significant fundraisers and contributors to the fund that enabled the Panorama Foundation to incorporate energy efficient features in its new auditorium. In addition to his professional pursuits, Artie was an avid and expert photographer who rarely went anywhere without a camera. He had a lifelong love of gardening and was a Master Gardener. He also enjoyed camping, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and bicycling. His favorite destinations included the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, Big Bend in Texas, and the San Juan Islands and Olympic Peninsula in Washington. As a member of the United Churches of Olympia, Artie was fascinated by the relationship between science and religion, and he organized a popular Sunday school class on that topic. He and Arra also shared a passion for evolution that resulted in taking the entire family on a trip to the Galapagos Islands in 2005. Artie is survived by his wife, three children, four grandchildren, and a sister in Abilene, Texas. At his request, his ashes will be buried next to his grandparents at a small, country cemetery in Bald Prairie, Texas.

David had a normal childhood in the town of Newgulf, Texas. He liked to climb trees and spent much of his time in the big pecan tree beside the house. He learned to row as he fell, so there were not too many bruised or skinned knees. He preferred cats for pets and still does. As a teenager, he had several rifles and liked to hunt small game in wooded areas just outside the town. But as an adult, he refuses to hunt or shoot any kind of game except with a camera. David Mahavier, who became “Dave” after he entered college, completed all 12 grades of public school at Boling Independent School. He was awarded the “Gold Pin” for Honor Roll for three of the four high school grades, and was a member of the Quill and Scroll Journalism Club. He did not enjoy nor play contact sports during his school years. He graduated from Wharton County Junior College and then from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas with a degree in commercial art. Son of Frank Petter and Anna Jane Pohl
He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1968 having proudly served two years of active duty and four years in the Reserves. Following active duty he was employed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and spent duty time with the Galveston District, the Fort Worth District, and the Middle East Division (headquartered in Winchester, Virginia) which required extensive travel both in the U.S. and overseas, including Egypt. He retired as Chief of Structural Engineering Section, Galveston District. His civil and structural project experience also gained him a position with Bernard Johnson Inc. in Houston to work with the construction plans for the Texas Viaduct in The Texarkana, Texas Urban Renewal Program as well as several other flood control, bridge design and seawater projects.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Annie Petter. He is lovingly remembered by his son Robert R. Petter, Jr. of Houston; his brother Marvin Frank Petter and wife Virginia, of West Columbia; his twin sister Laura "Lolly" Pilgrim and husband Billy of Houston; nieces, Rebecca "Becky" Schaider and Carolyn Laurette Crisp; nephew Michael A. Petter; grand nieces and nephews; and many other cherished relatives and friends. He touched the lives of everyone who knew him and never met a stranger. He helped anyone who asked no matter what their request. He loved to talk and could go on for hours, especially about politics. Being proud of his Czech heritage, he traveled to the Czech Republic to visit the homeland of his grandfather, Frank Anton Petter, who immigrated from Moravia (CR) to Texas in 1891. He would correct anyone who referred to him as a Bohemian and let them know he was a Moravian. He longed to continue his travels after his retirement, his greatest regret being that his health prevented it. His older brother, Marvin, had a paver installed at the W.C. Veterans Park in West Columbia, TX. It reads as follows: "Robert Petter - U S Army Ordnance - Yuma Proving grounds - CRTC - Mos 509.34. - 1962-1968".
Bob chose to be cremated. There will be a gathering of friends and family at the Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Drive) later this fall for the inurnment service. His family wishes to thank all his caregivers who tried everything they could to prolong his life.
