Walter Saunders Scofield's people came from Fairfield County, Conn., to Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana where he was born in 1847.  Records indicate that Scofield was paroled out of the Confederate Army as a private on June 8, 1865, and the following year walked from Louisiana to Galveston where he boarded a British sailing ship, the "Derby," bound for Brazil.  (The Derby was the ship that Frank McMullen had chartered for his immigrant colony.)   .....

....Scofield, a civil engineer, and surveyor met and married Celia Davis Leitner, another Confederado immigrant about the same age.  They lived on Leitner's parent's farm in Cidade de Cannavieras.  Georgia was born in 1871, Edith in 1873, but their mother, who apparently suffered from a respiratory condition, died two months after Edith's birth after, "Literally being worked to death.  These people were unaccustomed to hard labor."

In 1876, Scofield married 15-year-old Mary Rives "Matilde" Mobley, who possibly sailed on the same ship as Scofield.  Mobley's mother had been raising Scofield's daughters.

The girls hated the stepmother barely older than themselves, and Scofield, on April 1, 1883, sent them to the United States to live with his parents, ostensibly to get a proper education.  Then more misfortune; Both of Scofield's parents died within a few years of each other,  Lacking the money to return to Brazil, Scofield and his stateside kin opted to split them; Georgia was sent to live with "the less educated uncle"-- Scofield's brother, Eddy, who had recently taken a new wife, Marietta.  Edith fared a bit better, living with another of Scofield's brothers, Archie, near Magnolia, Miss.

Letter from Walter's mother in Mississippi to relative Leitner Shurley, March 13, 1884, after Walter's father's death:

"If Walter does not come, I shall go live with my son, Archie, and take one of the children with me.  The thought of separating the children greatly distresses me.  The one who falls into her Uncle Archie's hands will fare well.  The one who goes to Uncle Eddy, not near so well, especially as to moral training and mental culture.  (Georgia) says if anything happens to her father, and she

is not able to live with her grandparents, she wants to go to Cousin Shirley.  Edith, poor child, says "If Papa does not come -- make (sic) no difference where we live."

Later, in a letter from a Leitner Shurley to Edith, there are allusions that Georgia may have suffered from mental illness-- nerves-- and that "I never knew any of your mother's people to be afflicted that way."

Letter from Walter Scofield to Ms. G. Hall of New Orleans, for whom Georgia worked as a servant, Sept. 1895

She was sent to my parents in the U.S. at 11 years of age, to be "highly educated."  She soon saw them die at a most unlikely moment, and she was left without resources during the years in which I was helplessly penniless and bedridden.  Her mind was deranged by her misfortunes and is at times unbalanced.  Poor child!  With proper care and kindness that my parents were giving, she would have been destined for a higher sphere of usefulness, but after their deaths, her protectors, being poor and ignorant, used her as a servant girl, without training even for that career.

Georgia also attempted a reunion with her father and stepmother, returning to Brazil in her late teens.  It didn't go well.  She moved to the Azores with a Portuguese husband and later returned to the United States, where more misery ensued, including two dead children.

Letter from Georgia to Edith, June 14, 1901, two or three months before she died:

"I am greatly saddened by the loss of my sweet Lorenzo, who 11 days ago, fell into the arms of an angel in heaven.  Weeks before Lorenzo passed away, he was so happy and energetic... It is some relief that his little body is no longer in pain.  When he got sick, there was nothing we could do.  We had no money and I am afraid we waited too late to get to a doctor in the city... All we could do was bundle him up in a blanket and take him home to meet his maker."

Letter from Walter Scofield to Edith on Georgia's death, Nov 18, 1901:

"Since the unlucky hour when lost her grandparents, she has seen  few real, seamless, happy days and finally, my sweet, pretty passionately loving impulsive child has been crushed to death, with a fearful poise, her last nerve snapped in the full bloom of life and a cruel death has relieved her of a more cruel, unhappy life."

Walter Scofield again picks up the story in a letter to Edith, then about 20, almost 11 years after sending the girls to the U.S.  Edith has refused to return to Brazil.

"I doubt I can ever forget the feelings of having been so outraged, disgusted by your deliberate disobedience and by your mean, selfish disregard for our case... and by your ... offensive manner of expressing to us, your bold resolutions, in such imprudent rude insulting letters... the last of which-- two years ago-- concluded saying it might be your "last" letter to me.

Now, in your long letter of Nov. 1, you only show that your self-love of false pride has been hurt.  That remorse has forced you, at last, to confess what you have always denied ask (sic) the cruel treatment of neglect that you now say ruined a weak-minded unfortunate...

While you censure me... you inform me that you have joined the Methodist church without consulting me.

As Edith grew older, she became more curious about her mother, Celia Scofield, but time did little to dilute the rage at her father for what she regarded as his having cast her and her sister off as orphans.  She wrote "hypocrite" on some of the letters, an apparent reference to her stepmother's mother, Mary Mobley, whom she believed was the force behind the decision to send the girls away.

Letters from Mary Mobley to Edith suggest Edith's step-grandmother was at least trying to play peacemaker.  Sometime in 1901, she wrote, "I beg you to reconsider with your (stepmother) and father.  It grieves him so to that you don't love your (stepmother)... For Christ's sake, let them have peace."

Edith wrote "old hypocrite" on the letter.

Money might also have been an issue:  When Celia Scofield's father died in 1869 and her mother a few years later, the farm, or at least part of it, was willed to the girls.  Instead, Walter Scofield sold it-- some believe, he was in debt and desperately needed the money.  "In letters, it says the father sold it to make his second family comfortable, and that just breaks your heart,"

Edith may well have underestimated how hard life was for Walter Scofield and the other Confederados.  He had big dreams and was a very hopeful character.  He had hoped to make a better life.  He always digging for rubies and diamonds.  He exported whale oil.

Letter from Walter Scolfield to Edith, 1890s:

"Your mother died nearly four hours after a day of overexertion... two months after you were born.  At your dying grandmother's request, I left a good (hard-earned position)... and came to help run the farm while your mother nursed your grandmother, a consumptive.

I put five years of... hard rough work on that place... we made a few new plantations, houses, pastures but just after I came, cocoa went down and fell... lower and lower, each year.  We did our best, new debts increased, old ones, which with heavy interests of 12% compounded... then (relative) Howard Leitner, sick and desperate, determined to sell his interest in the plantation forced a liquidation of debts... I had to agree to sell also."

At 24, Edith married a man of about 50 and the couple had four children.  As the years passed, the chill between father and daughter thawed and the two came to at least a tentative continents-apart reconciliation.

The in 1922 Walter Scolfield, nearing the end of his life and likely knowing it, wrote what appears to be the "fetch me letter," asking his daughter for passage to the country he had forsaken.  He wanted to see his grandchildren.

"His heart was very much thawed toward the end of his life" it is said.

The reasons are unclear as to why-- possibly because Edith was dealing with her own ailing and aging husband-- but Walter didn't make it.

He died in Teofilo Otoni the following year and was buried, eventually with several of his children from his second marriage-- Edith's half-siblings.

Edith died in Pineville, N.C. on June 9, 1956.

(NOTE: Lorenzo Dow Scofield, mentioned above, the father of Walter is mentioned on Find A Grave as having gone to Brazil.  At this time, information about him traveling there has been elusive.)

Find A Grave

Lorenzo was the 9th of 11 children born to Silvanus and Ruth (Reynolds) Scofield. He was born in Stamford, Connecticut, but soon afterward, the family began its migration west. They settled briefly in Westchester County, New York before continuing on to Fayette County, Indiana.

Lorenzo married Elizabeth Ann Phelps on March 5, 1846, in Ever-green, Itawamba, Mississippi. They were the parents of 5 children.

Lorenzo was a baptist minister.

According to family tradition, at the time of the Civil War, Lorenzo and his family were struck with the dilemma of living in the south and being anti-slavery. Lorenzo and his family moved to Brazil for several years. Some of Lorenzo's children settled in Brazil and never returned to America. Lorenzo and Elizabeth did return and they lived in Mississippi for several years before they died.
