Per "The Lost Colony of the Confederacy" by Eugene C. Harter (himself a Confederado descendant of the Harris family), the entire disastrous trip is chronicled.  The Thatcher family was part of the ill-fated  Frank McMullan group that was setting up the colony of "New Texas", sailing out of the port of Galveston, Texas, USA  For a good synopsis of the trip, see the account of "Billy Budd - His story.  (Billy Gill was married to Fannie Garlington - the first cousin of the webmaster's great grandmother)

The Thatcher family had arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 20 1867 aboard the steamer North America, sailing from New York City, USA.  The family lived in the city of Iguape until the middle of 1869.  On August 22, 1869, they traveled back to Rio along with the family of the Rev. Joseph Wood Dunn.  Joseph was the brother of Ballard Smith Dunn.  On Sept. 10, 1869, the Thatcher's again left Rio and went to Santos by the steamer "Paulista" and from there they traveled inland to  Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, São Paulo, Brasil - joining the American colony already established there.

On June 12, 1890, Andrew Thatcher declared his intention to remain a citizen of the United States of America.

(Loosely translated from Portuguese)

About Simeão Thacher: On the last Thursday in Rebouças (Sumaré), Mr. Simeon Thacher died. He was the former owner of the Pinheiro farm, recently acquired by the state government for the establishment of a colonial nucleus. The deceased, who was fifty-one years of age, was of American nationality and enjoyed general sympathy in that locality for the straightforwardness of his character. The burial took place the day before yesterday, having followed the body of the deceased to Vila Americana and from there to the cemetery of São Luiz, of this municipality. Peace to your soul.

As per Betty Antunes de Oliveira's book "Sparkle in Dry Stub", p.141, Annie Lou Vinson and Lovie Irene Fielder were teachers who came from Alabama, USA.  They were both contracted for 3 years by the group of Santa Barbara d'Oeste residents to teach the children of the settlers. They arrived in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, on October 6, 1886, by the ship Finance¹ ¹ OLIVEIRA, Betty Antunes. Movement of North American Passengers in the Port of Rio de Janeiro. 1865-1890. Rio de Janeiro.

P. 142, Betty Antunes de Oliveira tells us that Annie Lou Vinson married Simeon B. Thacher in Santa Barbara d'Oeste and died on September 26, 1894.  She was 31 years old. Annie was buried in the Campo Cemetery.

HARRIS FAMILY 2.jpg
HARRIS FAMILY 2.jpg

Not long after Sherman's five days of destruction, word arrived that John and William's father had died in battle.  The boy's mother was devastated.  How could the Yankees kill this kind, strong, blue-eyed man, so full of fun and spirit?  She never recovered from the blow.  Within a few months of her husband, she was put to bed.  Expressing hope that she would see her husband in heaven, she died several days before the peace of Appomattox.

The Reverend Junius C. Newman, the pastor of the Methodist church, part of the Alabam Conference, had tried in vain to console the widow.  Now, he took the young boys in, sharing with them the little food available to his family.  Sherman's bummers had stolen almost everything they owned, leaving them little more than a few pieces of furniture and the clothes on their backs.  Stunned by events and the desolation that overwhelmed Meridian, Newman began his plans for moving his newly enlarged family to a safer place.  He wondered whether life in Brazil, about which he had read, might not be preferable to this living hell that General Sherman had created.

On August 5, 1867, Rev. Junius Newman and his family arrived in Rio de Janeiro.  He came as a minister from the Alabama Methodist Conference and settled near Col. William Norris in the town that would become American, Sao Paulo, where he organized the first Methodist church in that region.

Excerpted and paraphrased

John Wesley Harris and his brother, William, were youngsters living near Meridian, Mississippi, in February 1864, when General Tecumseh Sherman came through on the Meridian Campaign.  The two boys watched the Union army plunder and burn the little town.  "It was something," John recalled many years later, "that the North could take little pride from, not the kind of stuff likely to occupy the memorial plaques on the walls of West Point Military Academy....

"Bodies Of Five Missing From Two B-26 Crashes"

"LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE. Va. July 31.

--(AP)-- A search was resumed today by air-sea rescue units from Langley Air Force Base for the bodies of five men still missing from the crashes of two B-26 bombers in Chesapeake Bay.
The two bombers, each carrying a crew of three, were reported missing late Friday night by Langley authorities after they failed to return from a routine
navigational flight.
A search of the area about three miles northeast of Buckroe Beach and some two miles east of Grand View Light resulted in recovery Saturday night (7/29/1950) of one body and the nose wheel from one of the twin-engined planes.
The body recovered was that of Air ROTC Ca
det John F. Harter, of Dayton Ohio. Still missing are Master Sgt. Harley M. Brunner, of Chamblee, Ga.; Tech. Sgt. Samuel D. Sartain, of Royston, Ga.; Capt. Robert MacCoombs, of Marietta, Ga.; First Lt. Otis M. Jones, Jr., of Jessup, Ga.; and Air ROTC Cadet Thomas M. Miller, of Pittsburgh, Pa."

Per "SOLDADO DESCANSA!" BY JUDITH MAC KNIGTH JONES, PG. 305,359 E 360

(Loosely translated from Portuguese)

"Frank was a Major in the National Guard.  He was not considered the best among the American men.  He married Mary Prestridge, one of the best girls of the time.  Mary maintained great friendships throughout her life, which if she had only had her husband to depend upon, she would have been lost a long time ago.  Frank Thacher once had the Hawthorne brothers (his nephews-in-law) house burned down.  Two daughters of Dorah Thatcher, Minnies, and Lena we married to the Hawthorne brothers, Frank and Charles respectively.  There were disagreements in the family and Frank took the pains of his nieces.   No conclusion as to the fire was found, but years later it was learned that Frank was the one who had the Hawthorne house burned down.  He had paid 50,000 Reis to an employee to do the job.
